Internet from your tube light!?

Yes! You read the title correctly. Now if you do not know what we are talking about, well we are talking about the new Signify (previously Philips Lighting) LiFi systems that at present are the fastest and most reliable commercially available systems.

For those of you who are not familiar with the term LiFi, short for Light Fidelity, is a super-fast alternative to WiFi. It uses Visible Light Communication technology that transmits high-speed data.

At the moment there are approximately 4.4 million people accessing the internet, most of which are over wireless connections. This places wireless communication under increasing pressure as the radio spectrum is becoming congested.

Ttrulifi by Signify aims to offer the perfect solution which is a range of LiFi systems, providing two-way wireless communication that’s reliable, secure and fast.

The Trulifi systems work by modulating light waves to transmit data. A Universal Serial Bus ( or USB) is plugged into the device to receive and transmit data back to a transceiver.

Now talking about the speeds, the company boasts of speeds of up to 150 Megabits per second (Mbps) over large spaces. Also, it supports a fixed point-to-point system which is basically an ethernet cable but wireless and over light (if that makes any sense).

Signify’s first two Trulifi customers are corporate clients Globalworth, in Poland and Romania; and Claerhout Communication Campus, in Belgium. Currently, Signify is targeting its product at offices, hospitals, and other large buildings to start with and would eventually extend it to regular consumers in due time.  It could also be used to connect robots or machines in industrial plants. The company has not yet revealed a release date for the products.
